How to Use AI to Write a Novel (Without Losing Your Voice)
Write the book yourself, and let AI make you better at it. Writing is a craft, and the best AI tools serve the craft instead of replacing it. I write novels and I build AI writing software, and this is where I have landed after a lot of trial and error on both sides.
Can AI write a novel?
AI can generate a novel. It cannot write yours. Generating is typing a command and accepting what comes back. Writing is the thousand small decisions in between: which detail to keep, which line to cut, where a scene should end so that it hurts. Those decisions are the book. Hand them over and what is left may be long, tidy and grammatical, but it is not really anyone’s.
What happens when ChatGPT or Claude writes your book?
It feels fast at first and costs you over the length of a book. I use ChatGPT and Claude myself, and they are genuinely useful for questions and research. The trouble starts when they move from the margins of the book into the sentences. Here is what that looks like a few months in.
Your voice drifts towards the average
Chat tools are trained to produce the most likely next sentence. Most likely is another word for familiar. Accept enough of their suggestions and your prose slides, a little at a time, towards the way everyone else sounds.
The craft muscle weakens
Every scene you hand over is a scene you did not wrestle with. That wrestling is how writers get better. A year of prompting instead of drafting leaves you with more pages and less skill.
The chat forgets your book
A conversation in ChatGPT or Claude was not built to hold a 90,000-word manuscript in mind across months of drafting. Start a new chat and the eye colours, the timeline and who knows what are gone.
Readers notice
Readers may not be able to say what is wrong, but they feel it: the same rhythms, the same safe images, the same tidy emotional beats. Once a reader stops trusting the voice, they stop turning pages.
Why an author’s taste is the whole point
Taste is what makes a book beautiful, and it is the one thing no model can supply. Taste is every choice you make that nobody asked you to. It is why two writers can tell the same story and only one of them makes you cry.
A model can give you a competent sentence on demand. It cannot tell you which sentence is yours. The books people remember were not the most efficient to write. They were the ones where somebody cared about every choice.
Where does AI actually help a novelist?
AI helps most with the jobs that do not need your taste: checking, remembering and looking things up. Those are chores, and handing over chores leaves more time for the craft.
Catching what you can no longer see
By the third draft you read what you meant, not what is on the page. AI can check a whole manuscript for contradictions: an age that changes, a character who knows something too early, a scar that moves from the left arm to the right. The answer is either on the page or it isn’t, which is exactly the kind of question a machine is good at.
A sounding board when you are stuck
Ask for ten ways a confrontation could go, throw all ten away, and notice which one made you argue back. That argument is your idea. The AI was only something to push against.
Research
How long does a sailing ship take to cross the Atlantic? What did a Victorian clerk earn? A good first answer, as long as you check anything the story leans on.

Every sentence, including the bad ones. A bad sentence you wrote can be revised into a good one. A generated sentence can only be accepted or deleted.
Talk to AI when you are stuck, not instead of writing
Use it to argue with, then close the tab and write the scene in your own words.
Check the whole book when a draft is done
Check every chapter against every other. This is where AI earns its place: it does not get tired at chapter forty.
Judge every flag yourself
A good checker shows you the exact lines on both sides, so you can decide in seconds whether it is a slip or something your story already explains. Then revise, and check again.
Frequently asked questions
Is it cheating to use AI to write a novel?
Using AI to check your work or research is no more cheating than using a spell checker, an editor or a library. Presenting generated prose as your own writing is a different matter, and many readers and publishers see it that way. The honest line is simple: the words on the page should be yours.
Can AI find plot holes and continuity errors?
Yes. AI can find contradictions against facts the manuscript has already established, such as a changed age, a character who knows something too early, or an injury that disappears. It cannot tell you whether a twist is satisfying; that is still your judgement.
Will publishers accept a novel written with AI help?
Policies vary and they change, so check the current rules of whoever you publish with. Some self-publishing platforms ask you to disclose AI-generated text. Using AI to check or organise your own writing is generally treated differently from submitting generated prose.
Is my manuscript used to train AI models?
