Draft to Done · A November novel challenge

Write your novel in November. Check it in December.

NaNoWriMo closed in 2025. Draft to Done is a free November novel challenge for writers who still want their 50,000 words in November. Pick a word goal, draft from November 1 to 30 with free goals, streaks and reminders, and if you finish, we'll add 50,000 bonus credits to your Bunsho account in December: enough to read a full novel and check about 90 chapters after that. They never expire.

We'll email you when you sign up, on Nov 1, Nov 15, Nov 30 and Dec 1, and once in January. Unsubscribe anytime.

How it works

01

Now: sign up

Leave the email you'll use for your Bunsho account and pick a word goal: 25,000, the classic 50k in November, 80,000 words, or a number of your own. Sign up any time before November 1. Late joiners welcome.

02

November 1 to 30: draft in Bunsho

Set your goal in Bunsho, pick a reminder time and write. Goals, streaks and reminders are free, and writing is never metered. Don't fix anything in November. December is for that.

03

Early December: finish and claim

On November 30 we'll email you a one-click link to tell us you finished. Finishers get 50,000 bonus credits added to their Bunsho account in early December, enough to read a full novel and check about 90 chapters after that, and they never expire. Everyone who signed up but didn't finish gets a code for 20% off their first month of Storyteller, valid until January 31.

What you get

The Bunsho editor, word goals, streaks and reminders. Writing is never metered, and the editor needs no account.

If you finish: 50,000 bonus credits that never expire

That's enough to read a full novel and check about 90 chapters after that. Use them whenever you're ready. They work on every plan, Free included, with no subscription and no card. They're added to the Bunsho account that uses your sign-up email.

If you signed up but didn't finish: 20% off your first month of Storyteller

Whatever you wrote in November counts. The code is there for whenever you're ready to check it, until January 31.

Why December

Most November novel challenges end on November 30 with a word count. Fast drafting works because you don't stop to fix things. That's also why a NaNo-style draft tends to disagree with itself by week three: a name changes, a timeline slips, someone knows a secret too early. Draft to Done keeps the two jobs apart. November is for words. December is for finding where the story stopped holding together, one deliberate check when you ask for it. For the daily side of it, the word count goal calculator gives you your number, and the 1,667 problem has a routine for the month.

Common questions

Is this the new NaNoWriMo?

No. NaNoWriMo closed in 2025, and Draft to Done is not affiliated with or endorsed by it. It's Bunsho's own free November challenge, for writers who still want a novel writing month.

Can I use it for my NaNo goal?

Yes. Pick 50,000 words for the classic NaNo goal, or 25,000, 80,000 or a number of your own. The word count goal calculator turns any goal and deadline into a daily number.

How do you know I finished?

We don't check. It's the honor system. On November 30 we'll email you a link, and if you reached your goal or wrote the end, you click it. We trust you.

What do 50,000 credits get me?

Enough to read a full novel and check about 90 chapters after that. A check runs only when you ask for one, and the cost is shown before anything runs.

Do the credits expire?

No. Use them whenever you're ready, in December or next year.

Do I need a paid plan?

No. The bonus credits work on the Free plan too. There's no subscription and no card. You only need to sign in to Bunsho with the email you signed up with.

Which email should I sign up with?

The one you'll use for your Bunsho account. That's the account we add the credits to.

What if I don't finish?

You get a code for 20% off your first month of Storyteller, valid until January 31. A half-finished draft is still a draft, and it's still worth checking.

Can I draft in another app?

Yes. Write wherever you like, then import your draft into Bunsho as .docx, Markdown or .txt when you're ready to check it. Goals and streaks only count words you write in Bunsho, so imported text won't move them.

Will Bunsho check my draft while I write?

No. Nothing runs while you draft. A check runs only when you ask for one, and the cost is shown before anything runs.

What happens to my manuscript?

Your manuscript lives on your machine, not on our servers. Pages are sent for analysis only when you run a check, and they're never stored or used for training. We use your email to send the event emails, and you can unsubscribe anytime.

Does it cost anything to join?

No. Joining is free, Bunsho is a free download for macOS and Windows, and the bonus credits work on the Free plan.
