Fix chapter headings in Word
Mark each chapter title as Heading 1 in Word so Bunsho splits your book into chapters.
Updated October 15, 2026
Bunsho makes a new chapter at every heading in your Word file. A title that is only bold, centred or large is not a heading to Word, so Bunsho does not see it. This guide shows how to turn your chapter titles into real headings. You do this in Word, not in Bunsho.
Check whether you have a problem
- Open your manuscript in Word.
- Click anywhere in a chapter title.
- Look at the Styles box on the Home tab. If it highlights Heading 1 or Heading 2, that title is fine. If it highlights Normal, it needs fixing.
Fix one title at a time
- Click anywhere in the chapter title. You do not need to select the words.
- Go to the Home tab.
- In the Styles gallery, click Heading 1. If you cannot see it, click the small arrow at the right of the gallery to show more styles.
- Repeat for each chapter title.
Tip:Heading 1 usually looks bigger and bluer than your own formatting. You can change how it looks without changing what it is: right-click Heading 1 in the gallery and choose Modify. Bunsho only reads that it is a heading, not how it looks.
Fix all the titles at once
If your chapter titles all look the same (say, bold and centred), you can select them all in one go.
- Click the first chapter title.
- On the Home tab, at the far right, click Select, then Select Text with Similar Formatting.
- With all the titles selected, click Heading 1 in the Styles gallery.
Mistakes to avoid
- Do not use headings for anything that is not a chapter. Every heading, from level 1 to 6, becomes a page in Bunsho. If you use Heading 2 for scene breaks, each scene becomes its own page.
- Give the book a title line, or name the file well. Bunsho names the book after the file. To use your real title, make the very first line your book's title, style it Heading 1, and put the first chapter heading straight after it with no text in between. That line becomes the book's name, not a page.
- Do not use Part titles at the same time as chapter titles unless you want each as a page. Each one becomes a page.
Save and import
- Save the file as a Word document (.docx). Choose File → Save As if you want to keep your original unchanged.
- Open Bunsho and follow import a manuscript.
- In the review box, check the message. "Created 24 chapters" (with your own number) means it worked. "Imported as one page" means Bunsho found no headings. Go back and check the titles.
Check that the chapters match your own count in the Binder after you open the book.
