Import a manuscript from Scrivener or Pages
Export from Scrivener or Pages as a Word file with chapter headings, then import it.
Updated October 15, 2026
Bunsho cannot open Scrivener projects or Pages documents directly. Export your book as a Word document (.docx) first, with chapter titles set as headings, then import that.
From Scrivener
- In Scrivener, choose File → Compile.
- Set the Compile For option to Microsoft Word (.docx).
- In the section layout, make sure your chapter titles are formatted as Heading 1 or Heading 2. Chapters then arrive ready-made.
- Click Compile and save the file somewhere you can find it.
- In Bunsho, click Import a manuscript, pick the .docx file, and follow import a manuscript.
Tip:Scrivener's compile settings differ between versions. If your chapters come in as one page, look for the setting that controls how chapter titles are styled in the compiled file and choose a heading style.
From Pages
- In Pages, give each chapter title a heading style. Click the title, then in the Format panel choose a Heading paragraph style from the style list at the top.
- Choose File → Export To → Word....
- Make sure the format is .docx, then click Next and save the file.
- In Bunsho, click Import a manuscript, pick the file, and follow import a manuscript.
Check it worked
In Bunsho's review box, "Created 24 chapters" (your own number) is what you want. "Imported as one page" means no headings came through. Open the exported Word file and check that each chapter title shows Heading 1 or Heading 2 in the Styles box. Fix chapter headings in Word shows how.
Images, tables, footnotes and comments do not come through on import, so keep your original project.
