Edit the beats of a scene

Reword, reorder, remove or add beats on the scene card before you write the scene. Editing by hand is free.

Updated October 15, 2026

The beats are the steps of your scene, in order. Before you click Write scene, you can shape them yourself so the scene comes out the way you want. Editing a card by hand costs nothing.

You can edit the beats only while the scene is not yet written. If you have already written it, use Rewrite this beat on the draft. See Direct a scene.

Reword a beat

  1. In the Director tab, click Show beats if the beats are folded.
  2. Click the sentence of the beat you want to change.
  3. Type your version in the box that says What happens.
  4. Press Enter to keep it, or Esc to put it back as it was.

Reorder

Hover a beat and drag it by its handle (Drag to reorder) to a new place. The numbers update.

Remove a beat

  1. Hover the beat.
  2. Click Remove. The beat shows as Removed.
  3. Changed your mind? Click Undo.

You cannot remove the last beat. A scene needs at least one.

Add a beat

Click + Add a beat under the last beat, type what happens, and press Enter.

Ask Bunsho for a new version of one beat

  1. Hover the beat and click Regenerate this beat. The price is shown.
  2. Type a note if you want one, in the box A note, if you want one.
  3. Click Regenerate, or Cancel.

When the beats read right, click Write scene.
