Why does Bunsho say my chapter is too long to check?
A check can only read a chapter up to a certain length. Split the chapter and check again.
Updated October 15, 2026
You ask for a check and Bunsho tells you a chapter is too long, or the whole book is too large for one review.
Why it happens
A continuity check reads a whole chapter at once, and there is a limit to how much it can read. The message tells you the limit in words for that chapter. Writing in Bunsho is never limited; only checks are.
What you may see
- "Your book came in as one chapter of ... words." Your whole book is a single page. Set your chapter titles as headings and import again. See Why did my whole book import as one chapter?.
- "... is too long to check (... words). Bunsho can check chapters up to about ... words. Split this chapter in two and check again." One chapter of your book is over the limit. Follow the steps below.
- "This book is too large to check in one review." Check it chapter by chapter with Check this chapter instead of one full review.
- "This book has more than ... chapters, which is more than one review can take." Same fix: use Check this chapter for each chapter.
Fix a chapter that is too long
- Note the chapter name in the message and the number of words it allows.
- Open that chapter in the editor and find a natural break, such as a scene change.
- In the Binder, add a new page for the second half. Cut the text from the first chapter and paste it into the new page.
- Give both pages a clear name.
- Open each part and choose Check this chapter (⌘⇧C on Mac, Ctrl+Shift+C on Windows).
Tip:Trying the same check again will not help for a size message, so Bunsho does not offer Try again for it. Make the chapter shorter first.
