Plan your book with the Planner

See every chapter as a card, write what each one is for, and rearrange in Grid or Tracks.

Updated October 15, 2026

The Planner shows your whole book as chapter cards. Each card has the chapter's title, its word count and a short note from you about what happens in it. The Planner does not use AI and costs no credits.

Open and close the Planner

  • Click Planner in the Manuscript | Planner switch at the top of the window.
  • Or press ⌘⇧P (Mac) or Ctrl+Shift+P (Windows). You can also choose View → Show Planner.
  • Click Manuscript to go back to writing.
Tip:The Planner needs an account. If you are signed out, Bunsho says The Planner needs an account. Your manuscript stays on your device. and offers to sign you in.

Write what a chapter is for

  1. Click a card. It opens as a larger sheet.
  2. Click the description. An empty one says What happens in this chapter?
  3. Type a sentence or two. There is no save button: it saves as you go.
  4. Press Esc or click outside the sheet to close it.

To jump into the chapter itself, double-click the card or click Open chapter on the sheet.

Grid and Tracks

The Planner layout switch at the top has two choices.

  • Grid lays the chapters out in reading order, so you can see the shape of the book at once.
  • Tracks puts the cards in rows. Use a track for a storyline or a character, so you can follow one thread through the book. Cards with no track sit in a row called Untracked.

Make a track

  1. Switch to Tracks.
  2. Click New track at the right of the strip above the cards.
  3. Type a name and confirm.
  4. To put a chapter on it, open the card, find Track, and pick the track. Pick Untracked to take it off again.

Each track row has a small menu to rename or delete it. Drag a track's name to change the order of the rows, or use the arrow to collapse a row.

Rearrange

  • Drag a card left or right to change where that chapter sits in the book. This changes the real order in your binder too.
  • In Tracks, drag a card up or down to move it to another track. That changes only its track.

A new, empty book shows one sample card and a New chapter button. Every chapter you write appears in the Planner in order.

Tip:Focus mode is not available while the Planner is open.
